Workshop
Date: 20 February, 2012
Topic: Forests and water
Venue: University of Melbourne, Graduate House,
220 Leicester Street, Carlton, Victoria
Interactions between forests and water resources is an important
issue for the forestry sector. Through projects in Programs one and
four, CRC scientists have been measuring and modelling changes in
stream flow and water quality in response to forest management
interventions including harvesting, fuel reduction burning,
thinning, plantation establishment and salvage logging after fire.
The science has focused on understanding changes in hydrological
processes and developing and testing predictive models.
This workshop will present the results of these endeavours and will
cover issues related to both native forest and plantation
management. It will also include a facilitated discussion of how
best to maximise impact from the results within and beyond the life
of the CRC.

This one-day national workshop will discuss key issues surrounding
the implications of drier and warmer climate for plantation
productivity and viability. Topics will include:
- physiology of drought – induced mortality
- incorporating mortality into forest growth models
- climatic drivers of mortality and regional drought risk
assessment
- drought impacts on wood quality
- past experience and future needs in mitigating against
drought
Speakers will include: Dr Mike Battaglia (CSIRO), Prof
David Tissue (UWS), Prof Richard Harper (Murdoch Uni), Dr Christine
